Mike Sherman is replacing Dennis Franchione
“Mike Sherman will leave his post as the offensive coordinator for the National Football League’s Texans to return to Texas A&M, where he worked as the offensive line coach in the 1990s. The seven-year contract pays an annual base salary of $1.8 million, about $200,000 less than Franchione made.
The 52-year-old Sherman coached at the College Station, Texas, school from 1989-1993 and again from 1995-96 before moving to Green Bay. He started as the Packers’ tight-ends coach before taking over the team as head coach in 2000.
“I’ve been able to live a dream in many ways,” Sherman said during a press conference that aired on the school’s Web site. “When I was here, I dreamt of being the coach of the Aggies. I’ve come full circle.”
Dennis Franchione resigned three days ago after five seasons and a 32-28 record with the Aggies. The team went 2-3 against the rival University of Texas, 19-21 in the Big 12 Conference and lost both bowl appearances during his tenure.
The former coach, who agreed to a buyout on the final five years of his contract, also was dogged this season by a controversy involving a for-pay newsletter sent to boosters that resulted in a public admonishment from school administrators.”
